Bruce

Bruce Lee was an enigmatic, legendary figure at the time of his death in 1973. His popularity has never waned and this 2001 documentary on the black belt movie star attempts to explain some of his magnetic appeal. Included in this biographical film is footage of THE GAME OF DEATH, the film that Lee was involved in at the time of his death. Pieced together by Lee aficionado John Little, the film's finale is a flurry of images of the master in action for over 30 minutes.

An inspired bit of filmmaking, featuring the rare, original 30 minutes of lost footage from Bruce Lee's uncompleted masterpiece THE GAME OF DEATH. Rather than bore you with details; even with just part of the true GAME OF DEATH FOOTAGE, this film is on par with any of Bruce's other completed films for one reason: you can only speculate at the potential greatness of what he started. For the true Bruce Lee fan who is sick of rip offs, bruce lee look-alikes, bruce lee imitators, and just plain pseudo-bruce documentaries, this DVD is worth it's weight in gold.

For those who are unfamiliar with the changes that Bruce Lee introduced to American Martial Arts, this video is a must. With the creation of Jeet Kune Do (intercepting fist), he soon had advanced black belts studying with him. Until he came along, the only Asian Martial Arts that were practiced in the U.S. were Ju Jitsu and Karate, both of which had come across from the U.S. Occupation of Japan. He awakened a large interest in Asian forms of Martial Arts. Interviews with many individuals, including students of his such as Kareem Abdul Jabbar combined with some amazing film footage from his never completed The Game of Death, which was designed to teach that the best style is no style, and the best way is reality. Unfortunately, he died before it was finished, but most of the varied combat forms shown in that film by various masters appear in this video. Had Bruce Lee decided to earn a Ph.D. in Philosophy, he would probably have ended up as the Chair of Stanford or Cal Berkeley's Philosophy. He was clearly the Chair of Martial Artists.

In my humble opinion, Bruce Lee: A Warrior's Journey is one of the best biographies of Bruce Lee's life, martial art, and his unfinished film, Game of Death. Lee's vision for the Game of Death was a culmination of his martial and philosophical beliefs. Actual movie footage thought to be lost has been rediscovered and utilized to offer viewers some insight into Lee's original concept. The film is a metaphor for the complex and unique man, actor, and martial artist Bruce Lee.
